This 27-Year-Old Nigerian Just Won An Award In The UK For Creating An App That Links Tutors With Students

A tutoring app developed by a 27-year-old Nigerian has won an engineering award given by the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering.
Godwin Benson designed Tuteria, a platform that links qualified tutors to students in their area and within their budget. He developed the platform based on the experiences he had as a tutor.
The engineering innovation award was launched in 2014 and rewards innovators in sub-Saharan Africa and Mr Benson beat 16 participants to clinch the £25,000 ($32,000) prize money.
Other entries in the competition included a system that reduces the amount of energy used to heat water, an app that controls water consumption and a smart jacket to identity pneumonia.
The group received coaching on preparing business plans and communication ahead of their final presentation on Tuesday in front of a live audience in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
The head judge of the competition Malcolm Brinded said that Tuteria could change the lives of people eager to learn:
“We’re proud to have him as our third Africa Prize winner, and we trust Tuteria will go on to change the lives of millions of people who are eager to learn and develop new skills.”
Mr Benson told the BBC Focus on Africa radio programme that he always knew he had a great project
“It is something that solves the problem of access to quality, personalised learning and helps people earn income from sharing their knowledge,” he said.
The app has a ratings system, and allows students to book lessons using an upfront online payment system and Tutors are then paid once the lessons have been confirmed, and Tuteria takes 15 to 30% commission for each paid lesson. Tutors cover a range of academic subjects.
Mr Benson plans to use the prize money to widen Tuteria’s offering “even beyond Nigeria.” And to include online classes and video courses as well.

I dont compare myself with Tiwa Savage, Yemi alade"- she baby

Although she is popular as an actress, Seyi Ariyo fondly called
She Baby has decided to spread her tentacles by delving into music. Already she has a song, ‘Champion,’ where she featured the self-acclaimed musical Taliban, Oritse Femi.
In an interview with PUNCH, when the actress-turned-singer was asked if she could compete with music heavy-weights like
Tiwa Savage or Yemi Alade , she simply said that she cannot be compared with them.
She said,
“Life is not a competition. We are three different artistes with different motives. I don’t compare myself with other artistes. I entertain myself and thrill my audience as I pass messages across to my fans. I have my own style. I released a new song, ‘Champion,’ with Oritse Femi recently just to motivate people. I made the song because I left the Nigerian movie industry for a while but now, I am back and better. The song is to tell people that even though you are out of the picture for a period of time, it does not mean that you are a failure in life. You can still come back and be bigger. I just used the song to motivate the masses. It is already enjoying massive airplay. ”
The actress who has been away from the industry for a while gave reasons for her actions and attributed it to motherhood.
“When I left the entertainment scene; it was not as if I was not working but I was not as vibrant as I used to be. I was actually working and I shot a movie, it was just my music career that was put on hold and it was because I had a baby and I needed to dedicate my time to her. Motherhood slowed me down a bit. Now, my daughter is six years old. I don’t think being a mother can slow down my career. She goes to school and when she comes back, she has to attend lesson and her grandmother is also there to take care of her. I don’t go to the studio every day; neither do I shoot a movie every day. There is always a way out,” she said.

“@precious_mabelicious I CELEBRATE YOU
Please do not allow @instablog9ja and some of those career killing commenters come between us. Who am I not to be readily available for a selfie with you? I only felt bad about you passing judgement on me without knowing that I had to leave Armani Hotel in Dubai to be on another location for ‘The wedding Party 2’ shoot.
God willing when next I am in Dubai I will make the same miles you travelled to make it up to you and your friends. Kindly ignore all the negative comments about you being described as ‘jobless’ on the blog. I have come to realise that people will always talk about you, either for good or bad, what is important is the content of your heart.
I am fully committed to loyal and true fans like you. The more fans we have the more popular we become in the business. So I have every reason be as nice as possible to people like you who made us become what we are by attending our shows, seeing our movies and supporting all creative endeavours.
But lets also quit passing quick judgement on celebrities. We must also understand that sometimes celebrities have bad days and don’t feel like being social. Famous people are human too, and they’re not always in the best mood. However, being congenial is pretty much part of our job, so we’ve got to at least avoid treating our fans terribly. Trust me to improve on myself…. And if you are in Nigeria on June 17, I do have a VIP Invite for you to be at the premiere of 10 Days In Sun City. (Enough selfie with me and the bigger stars that will make your day). One Love!
Note: Those of you who think my number one fan is jobless… DM her for your Dubai Employment Visa (if una get work like her una go comment less).”

NairaBet agent commits suicide over inability to pay N600,000 to customer

A NairaBet agent ended his life , on Wednesday, over his inability to pay a customer who allegedly won a N600,000 bet.
According to Punch, Residents of Obadeyi Ajala woke up on Wednesday to find the deceased dangling from a rope in an uncompleted shop at Ajala bus stop, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
A girlfriend of the deceased, who reportedly worked in a filling station in the area, was alerted. The lady reportedly passed out on sighting the body, but was revived by the sympathisers at the scene.
A resident, Monday Gabriel, told our correspondent on the telephone that the lady gave an account of what could have prompted him to commit suicide. He said, “When she regained consciousness, she told us that the man sent her a text message yesterday (Tuesday), saying he wanted to commit suicide.
She said she called his line, but he didn’t pick his calls. According to the girlfriend, the late man had a NairaBet shop. One of the customers won N600,000, but he has not paid him.”
Another eyewitness, Olanrewaju Adebiyi, said, “I learnt he ran a NairaBet shop. If it is true that he was owing a customer N600,000, he must have received the money from the NairaBet management and used it for something else.
I also play NairaBet and whenever I win, the agent I patronise pays me the moment the company credits his account. The company doesn’t owe the agents, but some of them play smart at times when customers win big money.”
An official of NairaBet Contact Centre, who gave her name only as Chidika, said that the firm always paid for any won ticket, She said, “We always pay for any won ticket. An agent has his own personal business. .
He/she is just a partner with NairaBet in which we share commission on a monthly or weekly basis. So, it depends on the understanding he had with the customer or the issue on the ground before he committed suicide.”

Desmond Elliot, Mercy Aigbe volunteer to champion campaign against widows’ maltreatment in Nigeria

Nollywood actor and member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot has teamed up with another actress, Mercy Aigbe to headline a national campaign initiated to draw attention to the plight of widows in Nigeria with a view to ameliorating their suffering.
At a press unveiling organized in Lagos, Friday by the Felix King Foundation, Elliot and Aigbe spoke strongly against many cultural and behavioural practices in many communities in Nigeria that tend to limit the rights of widows, disinherit them and treat them following the demise of their husbands and vowed to continue speaking out until there is a social movement towards the direction of not just protecting widows but creating an environment of economic and social inclusion that would enable them deal with the pains of their losses much more easily.
Speaking on the plight of widows in many communities in Nigeria, Elliot wondered why it is usually convenient for men to blame women for the deaths of their husbands and spoke of the need for government and all layers of society to work towards a total change of attitude towards these vulnerable members of the society.
“We live in a society where women are blamed each time a man dies. But no one ever thinks of the pains they have to bear in bringing up the children left behind,” Desmond said and called for legislations across the states of the federation that will criminalise maltreatment and disinheritance of widows.
He also called on men to prepare for the eventualities of their death by writing their wills as a means of protecting the future of their children and the comfort of the women they very likely will leave behind.
Adding her voice to the challenge, Mercy Aigbe also called for a general change in attitude by society towards widows while also not leaving out the cultural practices that form the foundations of the dehumanization of widows in Nigeria.
“We need to deal with some of these cultural issues that are generally skewed against women. We need to abrogate them and ensure that the rights of these widows are protected. We live in a society where economic power still rests with the men. This is why we need to talk to community leaders, especially in the rural communities where these victims, most of whom are poor and uneducated, are found so that the change can be effective, starting from the grassroots upwards,” Aigbe said.
Earlier in his address, Founder of Felix King Charity Foundation, Mr Felix King, expressed sadness over the continued maltreatment of widows in many societies in Nigeria and spoke of the commitment of his Foundation to end it in all its forms and manifestations in all parts of Africa.
He said the Foundation, founded in 2016, organized the first ever International Summit for Widows in Nigeria and has since then, made several interventions in the quest to ease the suffering of widows.
“Our interventions to make life easier for widows have been designed to create an environment of inclusion for these suffering women, empower them to be financially independent, enable them feel and experience the love of society one more time and create a healthy environment for their equally deprived children to be integrated into society through education and other enabling welfare interventions,” he stated.
While appreciating the support being provided my Desmond Elliot and Mercy AIgbe on the projects, My King revealed that his Foundation will host an International Widows Summit in Benin, capital of Edo State, during the International Widows Day of June 23, 2017 to further highlight the need to protect the rights of widows in Nigeria.
He said the Foundation is already on the quest to raise one million signatures across Nigeria in support of the need to abolish all negative widowhood practices in Nigeria and Africa.
“We intend to collect at least one million signatures of Nigerians and Africans in support of the abolition of these negative practices. We are also hoping to forward these signatures and a Bill to the Edo State House of Assembly for a law that will criminalise the maltreatment of widows in the State. We are hoping that after this first step, same effort will be replicated across the other 35 states of the Federation and Abuja and by so doing, make this needed change happen.
Admitting the task is onerous and cannot be successfully undertaken by one person, he expressed the belief that with the two popular Nollywood actors joining voices with one million signatories to the petition, Nigeria will be rid of prejudices and other negative practices against widows in a very short time.
